It has been more than 12 years since solid surface got introduced in India, as brand Corian by DuPont .since then few more global companies have joined the bandwagon. Only recently, the acceptance of this wonderful material is increasing primarily because of the better spending capacity of the people. Many architects and designer are now convinced that this is the material for future and here to stay for long as one can creatively play with three key distinctive feature i.e. inconspicuous joints, thermo formability and translucent nature.
I have experimented hands on with various global brands and figured out that DuPont Corian works the best for me. As an entrepreneur I think DuPont is leader because of its initiative be it, creating wide convertors network or Design Innovation Program lead by my dear NID batch mate, Arvind Dutta to create awareness among youth. But though solid surface was born more than 40 years back, India has a lot of catching up to do as compared with the west. Solid surface is a beautiful material to work with, only if one understands this material properly. In India we still largely compare it as a replacement of stone or laminate/natural veneer. Even today it is still seen as countertop material.
Though, there are more than 500+ convertors, but I can count on fingers, convertors who really understand this material well and can give quality offering and do justice to this material. Rest of the people are overselling the concept and delivering ordinary work, simply because they would not have made enough investment in the machinery and equipments/ don’t have right skilled workforce and above all the knowledge about this material and the processes required to turn this material into a an aspiring product or a part of the creative space.
Convertors have been struggling with basic processes of handling the material/ cutting /joining and finishing. That’s it…no room for going beyond this… where as architects and designers in the west are treating this material as an fluid image created by running a stylus on tablet. They can think wild because they have Convertors with right knowledge, aesthetic sense and appropriate technology to turn the imagination into reality.
Inspite of all this ultimately we all k now what matters is passion to do good work. At Oystra my team is learning fast, heading towards this direction and wishes to create a change the way solid surface industry works in india.
